Fire vs Sound

"One of our applications is for a system to take out fires aboard the shuttle." says Dmitriy Plaks. The students are testing if sound waves, or acoustics, can take out flames. This team uses a candle and speakers, attempting to prove that sounds can cause lower pressure near flames, causing it to go out. Though they did not prove this in zero gravity, they proved that sound can cause small flames to go out with normal gravity. This can allow sound waves to make flames go out within a computer laboratory, without using water based extinguishers that would cause water damage.
